David Czerny, OD
David Czerny is proud to have been raised in the Northern Black Hills, and very excited to return home to live and work here. After graduating from Sturgis High School, he attended Black Hills State University where he pole vaulted for the BHSU track and field team. After BHSU, Dr. Czerny graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry with high distinction.
Dr. Dave loves helping people and truly cares for his patients. You can be certain that Dr. Dave will treat you as if you were a life-long friend or family member.
Dr. Czerny has attained knowledge of the latest treatment options available in optometry for a wide variety of ocular conditions. He has completed internship training at the following sites:
Fort Meade VA, with training in: Management of diabetic eye disease, dry eye, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma
Michigan State Neuro-Ophthalmology, with training in: Complex neurologic disorders & their impact on the visual system
Eaton Rapids Optometry, with training in: Pediatric vision care, developmental vision, contact lens fitting, vision therapy, primary care optometry, and co-management of ocular surgeries
Lansing Ophthalmology, with training in: Contact lens fitting, primary care optometry and co-management of ocular surgeries
Jessica Czerny, OD, DVM
Jessica is excited to be in Spearfish, where she graduated from Spearfish High School and attended Black Hills State for her undergraduate work. She is proud to say she is both a Spartan and a Yellow Jacket. She graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry with highest distinction as Valedictorian, and now is excited to be back in the beautiful Black Hills to practice. At Mountain Valley Vision Center, she provides full scope optometric services.
Dr. Jess also has a dual degree in veterinary medicine from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine where she graduated Summa Cum Laude! As a dual doctor in veterinary medicine and optometry, her impressive background gives her a strong understanding of how the body works and how your eyes are a window to your overall health. She enjoys educating people on how they can improve their vision and overall health through nutritional and lifestyle counseling. She enjoys human and animal health care and plans to use both backgrounds for the rest of her career.
In her free time, she loves two-stepping, cooking, and enjoying the outdoors with her husband Dave, their son Will and their dog Elly, including hiking, wake-boarding, mountain biking and CrossFit.
She has completed training at the following sites:
Black Hills Regional Eye Institute, with training in: LASIK co-management, primary care, contact lenses, management of a wide variety of eye disease, from uveitis to diabetes, and many more
Grand Rapids Veterans Hospital, with training in: Management of diabetic eye disease, dry eye, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and other eye diseases

Elaine Petry, OD
Dr. Elaine Petry is excited to be returning to practice in the beautiful Black Hills. She was born and raised in Rapid City, SD. She graduated from Central High School, then continued her collegiate education at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where she graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry. Her optometric education was completed at Midwestern University Arizona College Optometry.
During her training in optometry school, she completed the following internships:
Accent Eye Care and Sports Vision Therapy, with training in: Pediatric vision care, vision therapy, sports vision therapy and specialty contact lenses including rigid gas permeable, orthokeratology, hybrid, and scleral lenses.
Fort Meade VA, with training in: Glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy
Midwestern University Eye Institute, with training in: Low vision, binocular vision disorders, pediatric eye care, contact lens fittings
Barnett Dulaney Perkins Ophthalmology Eye Center, with training in: Glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, pre- and post-operative care for LASIK, PRK, ICL and cataracts
After completing optometry school, she decided to further her education and complete residency training in Primary Care Optometry through Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry. During her time in Oklahoma, she gained the most up to date knowledge in managing the care of patients with advanced ocular disease, emergency care and practicing full scope optometry.
She loves helping patients with all of their eye care needs and she treats each patient like they are family. She is looking forward to serving the community in the Northern Hills. She has a special interests in pediatrics, ocular disease management and fitting specialty contact lenses. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors exploring nature, especially with family and friends. She also enjoys trying new food places and traveling.
Stephen Khachikian, MD
Dr. Khachikian is an ophthalmologist from Black Hills Regional Eye Institute in Rapid City, SD. As a service to our patients he comes to Spearfish monthly to see patients who would otherwise need to travel to Rapid City. Dr. Khachikian has performed extensive clinical research in the areas of keratoconus, corneal topography and endothelial keratoplasty. Dr. Khachikian specializes in all forms of corneal transplantation and regularly performs refractive and cataract surgery including the use of toric and multifocal intraocular lenses.
